A LEVEL PSYCHOLOGY

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

In my experience as an A level-tutor, a common problem I see time and time again is that many student learn too much content. That sounds strange right? Surely learning the content is a good thing? Yes, of course content is needed, but too much emphasis is often placed on A01 (knowledge and understanding) which leads to two main issues. Firstly, students learn material that isn’t on the syllabus, and whilst it is credit worthy, it won’t earn you any extra marks. This takes up a lot of head space unnecessarily, leaving less ‘thinking room’. Secondly, the harder skills on the paper are A02 (application) and A03 (evaluation), and too much time on learning copious amounts of material takes time away from practising the more complex parts of the paper. At Psychologysure we work on a ‘need to know’ basis - that is, students are taught only the specification requirement material, so more time can be spent developing the critical thinking skills needed to tackle A02 and A03 which make up the majority of the papers. This also serves to reduce the completely overwhelming feeling many students have when they are flooded with too much information. When students feel like this they tend to shut down and can’t think clearly leading to disengagement in the classroom and underperformance. This teaching philosophy has led to consistently fantastic results - please read the TESTIMONIALS to find out about the experiences of some of my past and present students and their parents/caregivers.

HOW DO THE SESSIONS WORK?

Sessions can take place in person, online, or a mixture of the two. Every student is completely unique and you will receive a bespoke service tailored to your precise needs. For example, some students like to have a session for one hour a week, whereas others like two hours a week. Alternatively, some students prefer ‘crammer day sessions’ where they work for a whole day, less frequently. Each student will be supported to consolidate the entire course into manageable bite size chunks. This usually involves re-teaching the key material in a way that is simplified. Each student is extensively supported to strengthen their evaluation and extended writing skills. You will be taught tried and tested techniques to create organisation, focus and elaboration in all your A03. Each potential essay question will be prepared and practiced under timed conditions. Application skills will be developed through problem solving activities. You can expect marked work on a weekly basis, as well as mocks. I have previously examined and all feedback will be provided in line with the examination mark schemes. Most importantly, you can expect a warm, nurturing working relationship and an increase in your confidence levels and self esteem.

Following your actual A Level result, I provide a free after care service where we can talk through your marks and the necessary next steps needed for you to achieve your goals moving forward.

At various time points in the year, I am able to provide bespoke training courses which can be delivered to small groups of students. This can be created for specific groups of students who may be peers at school and who value revising together. The cost of the course of shared equally by the students and is based on the specific requirements of the students. I also create open courses which can be attended by anyone. No more than 10 students attend these courses to enable a personalised service. Please do get in touch if you are interested in a bespoke course. Open courses will advertised on the EVENTS section of this website, so do please check back for updates. More information about the courses which we offer can be found on the TRAINING page.
